Tresys XD Air was developed under the USG program name of FiST (File Sanitization Tool) in response to the highly publicized USB "thumb drive" threat in November 2008. As a result, USB devices were restricted or even banned in critical environments. However, this tool has been specifically screened and vetted by NSA and JTF-GNO to facilitate the tasks and procedures described in a 2008 DoD Communications Tasking Order (CTO) for USB scanning and file sanitization.

USB drives have been widely used to share vital information between users, partners, and applications so the need for a solution was evident. XD Air provides unique mobile media protection by ONLY allowing trusted content to be shared. Using a kiosk-based solution, XD Air inspects, filters, and cleans data on the device, making it safe to use, even in the most sensitive networks.

MXI drives used with the Tresys XD Air create a complete package of security to address the multiplicity of concerns about both Data-At-Rest (DAR) and transfer of data between disconnected systems.
